Places To Visit
Gemiler Bay

Gemiler Bay

The bay and beach, with their sheltered nature and beautiful sandy shore surrounded by pine and olive trees, attract not only tour boats but also, especially during the summer months, large numbers of picnickers arriving by road via Fethiye – Hisarönü – Kayaköy. Since the bay is only 6 km from Kayaköy, it can also be reached on foot from there. It has been arranged to serve as a stopover point on a trekking route.

Gemiler Island

A view of the ruins on the island.

The island’s former name was Aya Nikola. The island contains church ruins dating to the Early Christian period and the Byzantine Empire (between the 5th and 11th centuries). The frescoes of the large church are well preserved. There are also remains of cisterns along the shoreline. The most interesting ruin is a tunnel connecting two churches. Parts of the 500-meter-long tunnel have collapsed. Between the stairways inside the tunnel are 17 stopping points, representing the 17 times Jesus was made to stop on his way to the crucifixion. As a result of the earthquakes that occurred in 240–241 AD, part of the coastal ruins sank beneath the water. These submerged remains can be seen at a depth of two meters below the sea.

Gemiler Valley and Its Surroundings

The Gemile Valley, which extends inland from the beach in a steep and rugged manner, is fed by Aladere and its waterfall. The natural balance, which has begun to deteriorate due to the transfer of the waterfall’s water to the nearby Uzunyurt (Faralya) neighborhood, remains a topic on the environmental agenda. There are also other places to visit around Gemile. Beştaşlar, Soğuksu with its freshwater spring, Kısık Bay and Kısık Cave, and Afkule to their west are among these sites.
