It is a neighborhood of the Fethiye district of Muğla Province. In 2006, Ölüdeniz Beach was voted the most beautiful beach in the world with eighty-two percent of the votes.[1]
The town is highly developed in terms of tourism. Known as the Land of Light and Sun in the Lycian era and as the “Distant Land” in the Middle Ages, it is located on the Teke Peninsula in southwestern Anatolia. It is one of the lagoon formations found in Türkiye.
Ölüdeniz is as calm as its name suggests, resembling a still lake. Even on the stormiest days, while the shores of Belcekız struggle with waves, only gentle ripples appear in Ölüdeniz.
However, despite its calm appearance, Ölüdeniz renews itself almost every day for three invisible reasons. The first is the intense freshwater springs within Ölüdeniz, which create a current along the bottom flowing from inside the lagoon toward the open sea. The second is the continuous circulation of water into and out of the lagoon due to the salinity difference created by these spring waters. The third is the tidal effect: every two to three days, the sea level rises and falls by about half a meter on average. This results in a large volume of seawater entering and leaving the lagoon.
